Is Private Striking Coaching Good for Beginners?

Whether private striking coaching is worth it for total beginners — the trade-offs, the upside, and how to know if it fits you.

There's a common assumption that private coaching is something you graduate into after a year of group classes. For striking — boxing, Muay Thai, kickboxing — the opposite is usually true. Beginners benefit from private coaching more than experienced trainees do, because the cost of learning the wrong shape early is enormous.

Why beginners benefit most

Striking is shape-sensitive. A jab thrown from a bad stance becomes a year of bad jabs. A round kick learned with a dropped hand becomes a year of dropped hands. Those patterns are hard to retrain later because they're already automatic. Private coaching catches and fixes them in week one, not month twelve.

A beginner in a group class might get 30 seconds of individual feedback per hour. A beginner in a private session gets 60 minutes of it. Multiply that by even a few weeks and the gap is large.

What you're paying for

When you book a private striking session you're paying for three things:

  • Speed of learning — you get further per hour
  • Quality of fundamentals — fewer bad habits to unlearn
  • Custom pacing — no group to keep up with or wait for

When group classes are still the better call

If your goal is mainly social — meeting people, training in a busy room, regular scheduled volume — group classes are still a good fit. Private coaching is quieter by design. It's also more expensive per hour, even if it's cheaper per skill learned.

A reasonable starter pattern

A common pattern for beginners in Minnesota is to start with a few private sessions to build a real foundation, then layer in group classes or open-mat time once the basics feel automatic. That sequence costs more upfront and less in retraining.
